In suitable patients with symptomatic significant narrowing of a coronary artery, angioplasty and/or stent deployment is indicated.
Coronary angioplasty is a widening of the blocked artery by using a tiny balloon to compress the fatty deposits. The balloon may be inflated and deflated it several times. When the balloon is deflated, the artery is checked again to see if it has been opened wide enough to improve the blood flow.
The coronary stent is a tiny flexible tube made of a wire mesh. Once it is in the correct location of the narrowed artery, a balloon catheter is inflated and deflated. As the balloon is deflated, the stent remains in place holding the artery open. The catheter is removed, but the stent stays in place permanently.
