Arterial and Venous Doppler

The arterial and venous Doppler uses sound waves to evaluate the normal or abnormal blood to flow throughout the arteries and veins of the upper and lower extremities. Therefore, these tests will detect narrowing or blockages in these vessels.

For example, some patients complain of leg discomfort on walking which is relieved by rest.  The discomfort appears again upon resuming walking.  This may be due to a partial or total tool narrowing of one or more arteries of the legs.  The arterial Doppler study will confirm the location and severity of the arterial blockage to guide further therapy.

Patients who develop varicose veins with discomfort, swelling, inflammation, or even all ulcers in the legs and ankles may benefit from a venous Doppler test.

This study will detect the presence of new or old clots in the deep veins of the lower extremities.
